In Nashville for the Americana Music Awards (where she was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance), Bonnie Raitt sat down with Ann Powers for a long conversation about the Blues, her storied history as a performing songwriter and all of the influences that helped make her an internationally-recognized multi-Grammy Award winner. Folk Alley recorded the in-depth discussion in front of a live audience.

Raitt is a true American music icon. The daughter of Broadway musical star John Raitt, she taught herself to play Blues guitar and rose to prominence in a genre that had been dominated by men. Her music is both a cornerstone of the Americana songbook and a bridge for Top 40 listeners to connect with a roots-based sound.
